Curriculum Overview

We provide an exciting, creative curriculum focused on developing children’s creativity, skills and raising achievement.
We enhance classroom learning experiences through inspiring educational visits and encouraging visitors to come into school to share their experiences. We strive to bring the curriculum alive for the children. We are very lucky to have our own mini bus to be able to transport our children on trips.
We promote cooperation and collaboration through a variety of teaching strategies and differentiated activities. This is important in order to encourage children to become independent learners who are engaged and enthused to learn at school and at home.

If you would like to know more abut our curriculum please get in contact with Miss Cross, Deputy Headteacher.

The Curriculums we follow

Nursery and Reception children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.
Year 1 – Year 6 children follow the programme of study set out in the National Curriculum guidelines.
This is as follows

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Art
  • Computing
  • Geography
  • History
  • Music
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Design Technology (DT)
  • Modern Foreign Languages (French) (Year 3 – Year 6)
  • Religious Education (RE)
  • Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE)
  • Relationship and sex education (R.S.E)

All the classes study a theme/topic for a term. All the learning objectives and progression of skills have been broken down from the foundation subjects to ensure continuity and consistency of approach.

Your Unique Child

We recognise that your child is unique and will have different strengths, interests and needs. So we foster a positive attitude with regard to special educational and disability needs to build self-esteem and confidence.
We set high expectations and provide a supportive, encouraging environment in which children experience success and are motivated to achieve further success.
We have dedicated well trained staff who work tirelessly to give the children the support and intervention they need. Their work is managed by our Special Educational Needs & Disability Co-ordinator (SENDCO) Mrs Emma Oldham.

Phonics

At Kincraig Primary School we teach phonics through Letterland Phonics. This scheme makes learning to read, write and spell fun for both teachers and children. Based around a series of characters, Letterland Phonics was created to teach phonics using a story-based approach. These stories explain letter sounds & shapes, allowing children to progress quickly to word building, reading and writing. The story logic engages students leading to long-term retention of concepts. What’s more, Letterland Phonics is wonderfully multi-sensory, It activates every learning channel through music, actions, alliteration, movement, song, art, games and role-play.

To learn more and support your child with their Phonics, please visit the Letterland website and parents page:

At the end of Year 1, all children (unless identified) take a Phonics Screening Test

Reading at Kincraig

Children across the school have access to a large range of books in class and to take home for their home reader. We have bought a wide-selection of fiction and non-fiction books from the following providers, so that the children experience a broad and balanced reading curriculum:

  • Oxford Reading Tree (Fireflies, Snapdragons, Traditional Tales, All Stars, Treetops)
  • Letterland Phonics
